Frequently Asked Questions
How many berths should you choose for a bivouac tent?
Ideally, allow one more space than the number of sleepers: a 2-person tent is perfect for one person with their gear, or for two hikers travelling light.
Should you choose a 3-season or 4-season tent?
A 3-season tent covers you from spring through to autumn. Save the 4-season tent for winter, snow and strong high-altitude winds, where its reinforced fabric really earns its keep.
What weight should you aim for in a trekking tent?
For trekking, aim for under 2kg for two people, and less than 1kg for a solo ultralight tent. The right balance depends on how much comfort you're after and how long your days on the trail are.
Is a freestanding tent more practical?
Yes on hard terrain (rock, sand, wood), as it stands without pegs and can be moved around easily. On soft ground, a few pegs are still useful for pitching the flysheet taut.
How can you tell if a tent is truly waterproof?
Check the hydrostatic head of the flysheet and groundsheet, look for taped seams, and choose a flysheet that extends low to the ground for protection against wind and rain.
