Frequently Asked Questions
Why carry a whistle when hiking?
Because in an emergency (a fall, getting lost, an injury), a whistle carries far further than your voice, which tires quickly. Lightweight and battery-free, it lets you signal your position and alert rescuers whilst saving your energy. An essential piece of safety kit.
What's the distress signal on a whistle?
The international distress signal is six blasts in one minute, repeated after a pause, or three repeated blasts according to local convention. What matters most is a regular, repeated rhythm: learn it by heart before you head into the mountains.
A pea whistle or a pealess whistle?
Pea-less whistles are recommended for the mountains: they don't freeze and work even when wet, unlike ball-style models. They also tend to produce a powerful sound with very little breath.
Where to attach your whistle?
Within instant reach: on the rucksack strap, the zip of your jacket, or around your neck. Some rucksacks build it into a sternum strap buckle. What matters is being able to reach it instantly, even if you're injured or trapped.
