Frequently Asked Questions
What's a fleece jacket for on a hike?
This is the insulating layer: it keeps your body heat in while staying breathable. Wear it on its own during the milder months, or layer it under a waterproof jacket when it's cold and wet. Warm, lightweight and quick-drying, it's a real all-rounder.
Thin or thick fleece?
A thin fleece breathes better and suits sustained activity; a thick fleece keeps you warmer for breaks and bitter cold. The choice depends on the intensity of the effort and the expected temperature.
Is a fleece waterproof?
No: it insulates and breathes, but it won't block strong wind or rain. In bad weather, wear it underneath a windproof waterproof jacket, which completes the protection. Some fleeces add a windproof membrane.
Fleece or down jacket?
Fleece breathes better and dries fast, ideal for when you're pushing hard; a down jacket keeps you warmer for less weight, perfect for breaks. Many walkers bring both and layer them up depending on the activity and the cold.
